Shape up this summer

Earlier today, I mentioned that I’m part of Diet-to-Go’s new Summer Shape-Up campaign. **

SummerShapeup_badgeThe Summer Shape-Up With a Little Common-Sense is officially under way now, and I’m excited to be a part of it. The focus is on small, sustainable changes — the kind that keep you from feeling deprived and overwhelmed … the changes that I’m beginning to realize (finally, after nearly 42 years on this planet) are the best way to succeed at weight loss long-term.

Sure, I could severely limit my carb intake. I did it before, for two-plus years, and lost 110 pounds doing it. No hardship, either, enjoying my fill of steak, bacon and cheese. (I followed the “Atkins New Diet Revolution” book — not the kinder, gentler low-carb of “New Atkins for a New You.” And it worked. It worked very well. I dropped 100 pounds in the first year and then basically maintained for another year.)

I could — and perhaps should — swear off all added sugars for good.  But I know the minute I tell myself I can’t EVER have have ice cream/cake/a popsicle again, that’s all I’ll be able to think about. Besides, summer is about fun — and how much fun is it to gnaw on a plain celery stick while everyone else on the beach is enjoying a sweet frozen treat? (If you do overindulge, follow my friend Tamara’s 5 tips for getting back on track after a sugar binge. Excellent advice that I need to incorporate into my life this week.)

With severe restrictions out, that means it’s back to eating everything — in moderation, of course — and knowing which foods make me feel good, not guilty. And that’s where Diet-to-Go can come in handy. I’m looking forward to having some fresh, convenient options for the many, many times I have no time/desire to fix something for myself … the times I tend to hit one drive-thru or another, then feel guilty about it no matter how moderate my choices.

You can get some assistance from Diet-to-Go, too. Among the Summer Shape-Up’s parts:

— A DTG DietBet that starts June 28, with winners not only splitting the pot but also receiving a $50 Diet-to-Go gift card. I might not have lost enough to win my last three DietBets, but it won’t keep me from trying again. (What can I say? I’m an eternal optimist. Just because I didn’t win last time doesn’t mean I won’t the next …)

— A Facebook sweepstakes where the grand prize is a month’s worth of free meals. Find the official sweepstakes rules here.

— Diet-to-Go’s Google+ community, Common-Sense Healthy Living, is dedicated to — you guessed it, common-sense changes that can help us meet our weight-loss goals.

— A Twitter chat. The chat is set for a week from today, on Tuesday, June 18 (which would have been my Grandpa Kiger’s birthday), with prizes for participants.

Let’s do this. Hopefully by the end of summer, there’ll be a little bit less of all of us — especially me — to see around. I have a lot of pounds to lose if I’m going to hit my goal weight by my 42nd birthday in October.

** Disclosure: I’m getting a week’s worth of meals and a little cash for my participation in the campaign.
