Adventures in weight loss, cooking and life

Getting to goal, one choice at a time …

Weight Watchers, Take 2: Day One

No doubt, you’ve heard before that the new year is a perfect time for a new beginning.

For me, the new year tends to bring a shiny new nutritional approach — or at least a recommitment to eating better to lose weight. 2013 is no different.

That’s right. Today was the first day of my second go-round with Weight Watchers.

So far, so good. I made it through the day without feeling famished. Actually, I found it difficult to eat enough Points. I even fit in a Skinny Peppermint Mocha latte at Starbucks. But at bedtime, I still had 1 left — and that was after a post-work snack of soup and the last of my coconut milk nog.

Oats & berries IMG_1240I enjoyed a wide variety of food. Oats with berries, coconut and almond milk for breakfast; a turkey sandwich with veggies for lunch; SmartOnes pot roast with a side of roasted brussels sprouts for dinner; carrots, hummus and pretzels as a snack.

I tracked my eats; I did some wall pushups in the bathroom at work. That was it for exercise, but it’s better than nothing, right? Don’t want to overdo it on Day One and burn myself out.

Not for the first time, it occurred to me that the most important aspect of any diet is believing it works. You have to believe before you can put in the effort to succeed.

I still firmly believe that Atkins works … it just wasn’t working for me at this moment. And because of that, it was time to find something that will.

I’ve lost with Weight Watchers before; I can do it again.

It’s time. I really would like to be near my goal weight by my birthday.

Losing weight is easy …

... if you're in a coma, maybe. Most of us have to work at it — every day and every minute. It's not easy to make the right choices, to drink water instead of (diet) soda, pick the grilled chicken sandwich instead of a burger or choose to get up and get moving instead of lounging around in bed. After too many months of making the wrong choices under the guise of dabbling with paleo eating, I've re-joined Weight Watchers (online). My choices may no longer be low-carb or Whole30 or paleo, but the concept is the same: I'm still getting closer to my goal weight one choice at a time.
